Perspectives of Wyoming Trails

As part of our participation in the Western Trails Project David Kathka and Amy M. Lawrence were asked to write narrative essays explaining the scope and importance of the westward migration, an essential element of Wyoming history. And explain how the WSHS has been involved in preservation, interpretation, and promoting trails in Wyoming.

Wyoming's Trails: Thoroughfares to Modern Wyoming
By David Kathka

David Kathka This essay is a look back at how emigrants shaped and developed the land that was to become Wyoming. Reference is made to the stratigraphy of roads across Wyoming. The consequence of the roads was modern Wyoming. Kathka gives an excellent overview of the impact that the Wyoming State Historical Society has had in preserving, marking, and interpreting historic trails across Wyoming.

Other Wyoming Trails
By Amy M. Lawrence

Amy M. Lawrence This essay is an overview of the emigrant trails in Wyoming. Specifically, it names trails in Wyoming other than the Oregon/California Trail. "Wyoming's history in the middle of the 19th century is written in its emigrant trails ... Many of these trails later became the corridors for the migration of the pioneers, and finally highways and railroads."
