The first Wyoming Historical Calendar was published in 1981. Phil Roberts and Paula West-Chavoya of the Wyoming State Archives, Museums, and Historical Department (AMH) came up with the idea in 1980. At that time photographs from the collections of the Wyoming State Museum were featured in the calendar and daily Wyoming history facts were included for every day of the year. During the late 1980s the Wyoming State Historical Society began to sponsor the calendar with AMH. The Society paid for the calendar while the department's staff produced it. During the mid-1990s the department (then the Wyoming Department of Commerce) decided not to produce the calendars any longer. The American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming then agreed to sponsor the calendar with the Society. This agreement has been in effect since the 1996 calendar. Now, each year the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming, in cooperation with the Wyoming State Historical Society, publishes a calendar depicting scenes from Wyoming's history. Calendars display photos that support a theme of each year's publication. The covers are handsomely designed in color, and the monthly photos are in black and white. Daily entries, some amazing and others mundane, signify an historic event in a part of Wyoming.
![]() The 2002 calendar portrays photographs of Wyoming historic scenes that have been favorite spots or activities of tourists who visit Wyoming. Travelers to Wyoming have always enjoyed the out of doors, and many of the scenes are of scenic areas, such as the February photograph at Devil's Gate. Other months detail activities that tourist's like to enjoy. For example, tourists have come to Wyoming to visit dinosaur collections, as depicted in the January photograph. As with all of the Historical Calendars, the 2002 Wyoming Historical Calendar measures 14" wide, and when hung is about 22" high. Entries, such as Pres. Roosevelt signed proclamation establishing "Jackson Hole National Monument" (1943) and 1st "Cheyenne Frontier Days" (1897)" in the 2002 calendar, are included for each day of the year. ![]() Wyoming Historical Calendar 2002 - May Dude ranches have been a favorite of tourists to Wyoming, and the historic photograph (above) of the Eaton Ranch in the Big Horn Mountains from 1908 tells the story very well. ![]() Wyoming Historical Calendar 2002 - August Family Excursion during the early 1900s at the Wyoming-Colorado border.
